By Aaron Humes: Months after the general election Prime Minister John Briceño has officially announced the appointment of several ambassadors and diplomatic staff to various embassies and missions.
Among the notable appointments is president of the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry Katherine Meighan, who will serve as Ambassador to the Republic of China (Taiwan), replacing Dr Candice Pitts. Nestor Mendez takes on the role of Ambassador to the United States of America, a critical position given the bilateral relations between the two countries; he was most recently OAS Assistant Secretary General.
Janine Coye Felson was appointed as the Permanent Representative to the United Nations, alongside CEO Dr. Kenrick Williams who will serve as Deputy Permanent Representative. Ambassador Lou-Anne Burns Martinez is headed to the Republic of El Salvador, while Perlita Aldana will take on the role of Ambassador to Cuba. Luis Salazar is Chargé d’Affaires to Cuba, Dr Henry Canton as Ambassador for Trade to the Caribbean Community, and Alfonso Gahona and Ayesha Borland as Ambassadors at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Prime Minister also announced that several current ambassadors will continue in their positions, ensuring continuity in Belize’s diplomatic efforts. These include Cherie Nisbet as High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Oscar Arnold as Ambassador to Mexico, Jose Alpuche in Guatemala, Dr Gianni Avila in Belgium and the European Union, Gale Miller Garnett in Guyana, and Lawrence Sylvester as Non-Resident Ambassador to the Caribbean Community.
The ambassadors are currently in Belize for the Heads of Mission Encounter (HOME), an annual event held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from August 6-8. This gathering allows diplomats to discuss strategies, share insights, and coordinate on important foreign policy issues.
The appointments are effective August 1.
