By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: During Love Fm’s morning show today, Prime Minister John Briceno said that December’s GST free weekends was a resounding success.
PM Briceno noted that it was “extremely successful from all angles.”
The Prime Minister says that the GST free weekends created more economic activity across Belize.
“It created more economic activity and discouraged people from going to Chetumal. People stayed at home and the goods were cheaper,” the Prime Minister said.
PM Briceno also noted that the GST free weekends allowed the Government and GST department to help identify businesses that were not paying taxes.
While the official figures will be available after January 15, the Government believed that it was “5 million” in losses.
However, the PM says that the GST free weekend helped to increase Belizeans spending power over the holidays since it was a 12.5% break and thousands of Belizeans enjoyed the tax break.
