By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister John Briceño has addressed concerns regarding the recent decision to award a public contract for the Belcan Bridge Project to the Lebanese engineering firm, Turba Ltd., with oversight to be provided by the Belize City Council. This marks a significant shift, as it is the first time a bridge construction contract has been moved from the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) to a municipal body.

The contract has led to speculation about potential rifts between the Prime Minister and Infrastructure Minister, Julius Espat. Briceño, however, dismisses these claims, stating, “There’s no issue with Minister Espat and me. We have differences, which is normal in any cabinet.” He emphasized that both he and Espat are focused on the goal of completing the bridge.

The Prime Minister provided some context behind the decision to transition the project from a loan to a grant, indicating that the Ministry of Economic Transformation is now directly collaborating with the City Council. He reassured citizens that the MIDH would still play a vital role in the project, as their involvement is mandated by law.

With questions arising about the project’s financial implications, Briceño stated, “It is going to be at the very cost that the MIDH has an estimate.” He promised transparency in the bidding process but chose not to delve into specific details regarding the costs or the reasons behind the shift in contract authority.

Amidst these developments, concerns about intellectual property theft linked to the project have been raised. Responding to these allegations, Briceño argued, “If I pay you to do a job for me, that’s my plan, not yours.” He expressed confidence in the integrity of those hired for the job, dismissing the worries as the concerns of “intellectuals” who may view the situation differently.
