By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister John Briceño has addressed the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York City.

As expected, he touched on the ongoing territorial dispute with Guatemala, warning against doing anything that would upset Belize’s otherwise good bilateral relationship with them.

He further advocated for a Confidence Building Agreement with Guatemala specifically for the Sarstoon region while reiterating Belize’s borders as agreed in the 1859 Anglo-Guatemalan Treaty.

In contrast, speaking earlier this week, Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo made no mention of recent tensions, focusing on the decision to have the International Court of Justice (ICJ) resolve the matter.

We’ll have more of the Prime Minister’s full speech in a subsequent story.
