Prime Minister Briceño warns of higher fuel prices ahead

By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister John Briceño addressed students at the University of Belize’s main campus in Belmopan on Wednesday, discussing national leadership, economic development, and opportunities for Belize’s future. During the question and answer session, he warned that fuel prices, currently a concern for many Belizeans, are likely to increase further due to global factors, including the war in Iran.

“I’m sorry to give you the bad news, but right now it’s going to get worse because of the war in Iran. We have nothing to do with that. But the price of diesel has already, the fuel has gone up, and the next shipment is going to go up more, and we have no control over that. All we can do is to be able to try to get people working,” was his response to a question on what concrete things had and can be done to resolve the issue.

Addressing a question on wage increases and living standards, Briceño acknowledged the challenges posed by rising costs and mentioned plans to increase the minimum wage to $6 per hour, hoping to boost salaries. He also emphasized the government’s efforts to create jobs and support social programs.

Regarding the proposed Smart acquisition by Belize Telemedia Limited, Briceño explained that the company aimed to expand its services and increase cash flow while acknowledging potential drawbacks, such as reduced competition. He assured that the Public Utilities Commission would regulate utility companies to prevent exploitation.
