By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Prime Minister John Briceño says the government will seek an independent review of the issues surrounding Home Affairs Minister Oscar Mira before making any decisions on possible action.
Speaking on Thursday, Briceño revealed that he had instructed the Financial Secretary to request that the Auditor General conduct an audit into the contracts and transactions now under public scrutiny.
According to the Prime Minister, the review will focus on whether taxpayers received value for money and whether proper procurement procedures were followed during the period in question.
Briceño stressed that he does not want to prejudge the outcome before the facts are fully examined.
“I don’t want to prejudice the report,” the Prime Minister said. “Based on the report then we can act.”
The controversy has generated significant public discussion following allegations that businesses connected to members of Mira’s family benefited from government contracts.
When asked whether political action could be taken against Mira while the matter is being reviewed, Briceño indicated that he would wait for the findings of the audit before determining any next steps.
The Prime Minister also clarified that Mira currently serves as Minister of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries, with responsibility for the police portfolio, and suggested that decisions should be based on evidence rather than speculation.
The audit is expected to examine procurement practices and contract awards linked to the concerns that have recently dominated public debate.
For now, the government’s position appears to be that the Auditor General’s findings will guide any future decisions, as officials seek to determine whether proper procedures were followed and whether any irregularities occurred.
