By Zoila Palma: On the occasion of his 65th birthday, Prime Minister John Briceño turned his focus to the agricultural challenges facing Belize’s sugar industry.
Accompanied by Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, Jose Mai, and Marcos Osorio, Chairman of the Sugar Industry Control Board (SICB), the Prime Minister visited cane fields in Orange Walk to observe the application of treatment for Fusarium, a disease threatening the nation’s sugar cane crop.
During the visit, the delegation also toured nearby fields that are showing symptoms of the disease, as part of a broader assessment of the outbreak’s spread and impact.
In response to the growing threat, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Agriculture are collaborating on a plan to provide financial support to cane farmers.
The initiative aims to facilitate access to funding through the Development Finance Corporation (DFC) at affordable rates, enabling farmers to begin treatment applications immediately.
Officials say the timely intervention is critical to ensure a healthier and more productive 2025–2026 sugar cane crop.
