By Zoila Palma: Prime Minister John Briceño has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to revitalizing Belize’s sugar cane industry following a high-level meeting with key stakeholders on Wednesday.
The meeting brought together representatives from all 4 sugar cane farmers’ associations, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Sugar Industry Research and Development Institute (SIRDI), and senior government officials including Minister of Agriculture Abelardo Mai, Minister of State Dr. Osmond Martinez, and Senior Economist Dr. Marcelino Avila.
According to the Prime Minister, the gathering was both “productive” and collaborative, marking an important step in shaping the industry’s path forward.
“All hands on deck,” Prime Minister Briceño said in a statement. “Thank you to all four sugar cane associations, the Ministry of Agriculture, SIRDI, Minister Hon. Abelardo Mai, Minister of State Hon. Dr. Osmond Martinez, Sr. Economist Dr. Marcelino Avila as we concluded a productive session discussing the recovery of the sugar cane industry.”
He noted that everyone is aligned with the recovery strategy and committed to working together to ensure the long-term viability and growth of one of Belize’s most critical agricultural sectors.
