Prime Minister Briceño and Mexican President discuss energy and regional security

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On May 7, 2024, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador welcomed Prime Minister John Briceño in Mexico.

The purpose of the official visit was to discuss the strengthening of the relationship of friendship and cooperation between Belize and Mexico. 

The meeting marks a milestone in bilateral cooperation and in the mutual commitment to work together for the well-being of the people of Belize and Mexico.

During the meeting, President López Obrador and Prime Minister Briceño addressed a wide range of topics of common interest, including cooperation for development, energy, regional security, promotion of Central American integration with projects such as the Tren Maya, Sembrando Vida and migration.

President Lopez Obrador and Prime Minister Briceño reaffirmed their commitment to constructive dialogue and effective collaboration in the face of challenges facing Belize and Mexico and the region as a whole.

“President López Obrador thanked Prime Minister Briceño for the spirit of collaboration and friendship that has characterized the relationship between both countries over the years, and ratified Mexico’s interest in maintaining the work, together with Belize, in the construction of a prosperous and secure future for the two nations and their communities,” a statement from the Government of Mexico said.

Accompanying the leaders were the Undersecretary for Latin America and the Caribbean of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), Laura Elena Carrillo Cubillas; and the Belize Ambassador to Mexico, Oscar Lorenzo Arnold.

Prime Minister Briceño signed Belize’s accession to the founding agreement of the Latin American and Caribbean Space Agency (ALCE), an act in which Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena Ibarra served as an honorary witness.

With the future accession, Belize joins the 20 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean that agreed to consolidate a regional organization to coordinate exploration, research and technology activities in the space field, which contributes to comprehensive sustainable development.
