By Zoila Palma: Prime Minister John Briceño has called on Belizeans to proudly embrace their national identity as the country marks its 45th anniversary of Independence under the theme, “Look at Me, I Am Belize at 45.”
In his Independence Day message, Briceño said the anniversary provides an opportunity for Belize to showcase its people, diversity, resilience and potential.
“Today, more than ever, it is time for Belizeans to show the world who we truly are,” he declared.
The Prime Minister said the national identity is reflected in the contributions of Belizeans from all walks of life. “To say, ‘Look at me, I am Belize,’ is to stand proudly in our Belizean identity,” he stated.
He pointed to farmers, fishers, teachers, entrepreneurs, public officers, union leaders and other hardworking Belizeans as examples of the people who contribute to the nation’s growth.
The Prime Minister also said Belize’s identity extends beyond its natural attractions and cultural heritage. “The world must know us not only for our natural beauty, our barrier reef, and our rich cultural heritage, but also for the resilience, talent, and determination of our people,” Briceño said.
He urged Belizeans to continue building the country through unity, respect for differences, community support and a shared commitment to its future.
“The world must also know that Belizeans are compassionate, creative and innovative.
But showing the world who we are must begin with how we treat one another, how we respect our differences, how we support our communities and how we always choose unity over division,” the Prime Minister said.
