By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Data from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) showed that for the month of June, higher food prices were notable.
The inflation rate for ‘Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages’ stood at 6.1 percent for the month, largely due to higher prices for food items.
The cost of fresh vegetables rose by a whopping 17.8%.
Particularly the prices of cabbage was hiked from $1.87 to $2.86 per pound, a 53% increase.
The price for lettuce also increased by 37% from $3.26 to $4.48.
In addition, SIB data showed that prices for fruits, such as grapefruits, oranges, limes, grapes, watermelons and soursops went up by 8.9 percent.
Overall, consumer prices were up by 3.7% in June.
