By Aaron Humes: Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, the President of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, has landed in Belize for the first official state visit between the two Caribbean nations. His arrival on Sunday afternoon was warmly greeted at the Philip Goldson International Airport by a delegation including Francis Fonseca, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, and Ambassador Amalia Mai, CEO in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, alongside members of the Belize Defence Force Honour Guard.

President Ali was accompanied by Guyana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hugh Todd, as well as a delegation consisting of investors and business leaders, emphasizing the economic potential of this diplomatic endeavor.
The highlight of President Ali’s schedule is his address at the inauguration of the newly renovated National Assembly Building this morning, Monday, in Belmopan. Prime Minister John Briceño in an interview on Thursday noted the evolving dynamics of relations between Belize and Guyana, reflecting on a perception shift towards recognizing Guyana’s burgeoning opportunities, particularly in light of its newfound wealth from oil discoveries.
“It’s kind of ironic because at one time nobody wanted to go to Guyana and now everybody wants to go to Guyana,” stated Prime Minister Briceño. He reminisced about his early visits to Guyana’s capital Georgetown, comparing it to Belize City, and expressed the hope of fostering agreements between the two countries in crucial sectors such as agriculture, tourism, and education. “Oil is something we have to discuss regionally to see if there’s anything that can be done. I wish we could have another Petrocaribe program but I think that’s highly unlikely,” he added.
Following his arrival, President Ali participated in a motorcade to Orange Walk, where he is set to engage with Prime Minister Briceño at his farm. The two leaders will also share a dinner on Monday night, further solidifying their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation.
