By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Football fans in Belize will get a second opportunity to witness the decisive Premier Women’s League of Belize (PWLB) semifinals rematch between Jewel Fury FC and Napoles FC —at no cost. The Football Federation of Belize (FFB) has announced that entrance to the much-anticipated replay between the two Belmopan sides will be free, encouraging supporters to fill the stands at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan on Sunday, May 18, at 6:00 pm.
The decision to replay the second-leg semifinal comes after a formal protest by defending champions Jewel Fury FC, which led to the FFB’s annulment of Napoles FC’s advancement to the finals. Tournament officials determined that the match had been improperly concluded without a required penalty shootout, prompting the FFB to schedule a rematch.
Originally, Napoles FC had secured their place in the final against Sagitun GIRLZ after a 2-2 aggregate draw, prevailing on the away goal rule. However, Jewel Fury challenged the ruling, arguing that penalties should have been taken per competition bylaws. Following an extensive review, the FFB acknowledged a procedural error and ordered the match to be replayed under revised conditions, including:
- Neutral, non-local match officials
- The elimination of the away goal rule
- A complete reset of disciplinary actions from the annulled match
Now, the league prepares for what promises to be a grudge rematch, as Napoles feel cheated of their spot in the final while Jewel Fury feel vindicated.
With free entrance to the game, fans are expected to turn out in large numbers at the FFB Stadium.
