By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Wagiya SC pulled off a stunning upset on Sunday afternoon at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga, defeating Progresso FC 2–1 and derailing their bid to reclaim first place in the Premier League of Belize (PLB) 2025–2026 Opening Championship.
Progresso entered the match knowing that even a draw would be enough to lift them back to the top of the table with nine points, one more than Verdes FC, who had edged Belmopan FC 1–0 on Saturday. A win would have given Progresso a comfortable three-point cushion. But Wagiya, still winless after four matches, had other plans.
The Dangriga side struck first just before halftime, with Clay Flores (#6) scoring in the 44th minute. They extended their lead early in the second half when Devien Bell (#19) netted in the 55th minute, sending the home crowd into celebration.
Progresso responded in the 71st minute through Latrell Middleton (#7), one of their standout performers this season, but the comeback fell short. Despite late pressure, Wagiya held firm to secure their first win of the campaign.
The result leaves Progresso stuck at eight points, level with Verdes but behind in the standings on goal difference. Verdes still hold a game in hand, giving them a strategic advantage moving forward. Wagiya, meanwhile, climb to four points, injecting new life into their season and proving they can compete with the league’s top contenders.
Elsewhere in the weekend’s action, Capital Sports Club (Benque Viejo United) and Port Layola played to a 2–2 draw in Belmopan, keeping the mid-table race tight. Port Layola remain fifth with five points, while the White Lions earned their first point of the season.
Meanwhile, the 1-0 loss to Verdes keeps Belmopan at seven points, level with Napoles.
