By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Defending Premier League of Belize champions Verdes FC were held to a 0–0 draw by Wagiya SC on Sunday afternoon at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga, as the southern club earned their first point of the 2025–2026 PLB season.
Despite entering the match as heavy favourites, Verdes struggled to break down a determined Wagiya side that showed marked improvement in defensive organization. The draw lifts Verdes to five points from three matches, keeping them unbeaten but stalled in fourth place behind Progresso (8), Belmopan FC (7), and Napoles (7).
For Wagiya, the result marks a turning point. After three consecutive losses to Napoles, Port Layola, and Belmopan, the Dangriga-based club finally earned a result—thanks to a disciplined backline.
Verdes, who had not played a league match since their 7–0 demolition of Capital Sport Club two weeks ago, looked sluggish. Their midweek trip to Costa Rica, where they suffered an 8–1 defeat to CS Cartaginés in the Central American Cup, may have taken a toll. Sunday’s fixture was also their first away match of the PLB season.
The result leaves Verdes with work to do if they hope to defend their title. With Progresso surging to the top of the table after a 3–0 win over Napoles, and Belmopan FC continuing their strong start, the race for playoff positions is heating up early.
Wagiya, meanwhile, will take confidence from the draw as they prepare for Week 5. Their defensive resilience and improved structure suggest they may yet climb out of the bottom half.
