By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The highly anticipated Week 10 clash between Wagiya SC and Belmopan FC has been suspended following a breakdown in agreement over the match date. The Premier League of Belize (PLB) General Manager Wilhelm Miguel confirmed to Breaking Belize News on Saturday morning that Belmopan FC has opted not to play the game.
“Belmopan FC has decided that they will not play the game,” Miguel stated. “The matter will be sent to the proper (Disciplinary) Committee for review and a decision will be made on the matter. Just keeping you updated.”
The fixture, originally scheduled for Saturday, October 11 at 4:00 pm at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga, had been confirmed by the PLB following a ruling from the Committee responsible for scheduling. “That was a ruling from the Committee responsible for the scheduling of games as both Clubs were never in agreement with each other suggestions,” Miguel explained when asked why the match had been announced for Saturday despite the lack of consensus.
Tensions escalated during Friday’s Technical Meeting, where Belmopan FC walked out after failing to reach a resolution. The club had proposed that the match be played midweek next week in Belmopan as a backmatch, citing the fact that Wagiya cannot host night games due to inadequate lighting at the Carl Ramos Stadium. Wagiya, however, insisted that the match—being their designated home fixture—be played on Saturday as originally requested. The Dangriga-based club had already finalized logistics, including matchday security, and now expect to be awarded the three points.
Wagiya also pointed out that, due to the Belize Men’s National Team (BMNT) international friendly against Venezuela on Tuesday, October 14 in Chicago, all Week 10 matches were to be played on Saturday to accommodate national team travel. However, that friendly has since been called off due to security concerns in Chicago.
The suspension of the match now places the PLB’s Disciplinary Committee at the center of the resolution process. Both clubs are closely matched in the standings, with Belmopan FC holding a game in hand and a +5 goal difference, while Wagiya have scored 11 goals but carry a -3 goal differential.
Breaking Belize News also asked the PLB whether, given Belmopan FC’s decision not to play, the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) would still send referees to the Carl Ramos Stadium to officially record the match, or if the fixture is now considered officially suspended. As of Saturday morning, no response had been received.
Breaking Belize News will continue to follow developments as the PLB Disciplinary Committee reviews the matter.
Other Week 10 fixtures remain unaffected:
– Capital Sports Club vs Progresso – Isidoro Beaton Stadium, Belmopan – Saturday, October 11 at 7:30 pm
– Port Layola vs Napoles FC – Marion Jones Sports Complex, Belize City – Monday, October 13 at 4:00 pm
