Premier League of Belize: Verdes – Wagiya face off in clash of oldest PLB clubs on Sunday

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: League leaders Verdes, after their first loss, will be taking on Wagiya in Week 10 of the Premier League of Belize 2023-24 Closing Season at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio on Sunday at 4:00 pm.

The match features the two oldest teams in the league. Verdes and Wagiya date back to the mid-eighties when teams like Juventus from Orange Walk, Victoria from Corozal, and Milpros from Belize City were in their heyday. Only these two teams from Cayo and Dangriga, respectively, have survived from that era. The Belmopan Bandits came on a little later. Other than that the other PLB teams are rather young.

Verdes, who’ve been more successful financially, have been playing at the higher level but Wagiya, manned by Nelson Moss, have had their struggles but continue afloat in the country’s top league. And for that they are deserving of as much respect as Verdes.

In the other weekend games, Benque Viejo United, under new Head Coach Marvin Ottley, play the PLB’s third oldest team, the Bandits, at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium on Saturday at 7:30 pm.

At the same time, Altitude will be facing Progresso at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence at 7:30 pm, on Saturday as well.

Other than the Verdes-Wagiya game, Sunday also features second-place Port Loyola against Police Benque (Club Deportivo Benque), who won their first game this week, at 5:00 pm at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan.
