By Ruben Morales Iglesias: Verdes FC edged Progresso FC 1-0 in the first leg of the Premier League of Belize (PLB) Semifinals on Sunday at the People’s Stadium.
A penalty kick from #25 Krisean Lopez in the 59th minute proved to be the decisive factor in this closely fought contest.
Lopez’s clinical finish from the spot handed Verdes the lead, silencing the Progresso home crowd and putting Verdes in a strong position for the second leg. Progresso FC fought hard, creating opportunities and pushing for an equalizer, but Verdes’ disciplined defense and solid goalkeeping ensured they kept a clean sheet.
During the regular season, Verdes claimed their first encounter with a commanding 4-1 victory over Progresso in Benque Viejo del Carmen on January 18. However, Progresso showed improvement and determination in their second meeting, holding Verdes to a 0-0 draw in Orange Walk on February 23. Sunday’s semifinal further reflected the parity between the teams, though Verdes’ experience ultimately tipped the scales in their favour.
Progresso made the most of their home advantage, applying pressure yet failing to convert their efforts into goals. Verdes prevailed, giving them a slight advantage heading into the second leg, scheduled for their home turf in Benque Viejo del Carmen.
Progresso will need to dig deep to overturn the deficit, while Verdes look to capitalize on their momentum yand advance to the finals.
One thing is certain: the battle is far from over. With Verdes aiming to secure a spot in the finals and Progresso fighting to stay in contention, fans can look forward to an intense battle in the decisive leg. For now, Verdes have taken a step closer to the championship title and a chance at Concacaf Central American Cup qualification.
