By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Verdes FC reclaimed the top spot in the Premier League of Belize Closing Season on Wednesday night after rallying from a goal down to defeat Port Layola 2–1 at the Marion Jones Sports Complex in Belize City. The champions now sit on 15 points, two more than Progresso, and remain perfect with five wins from five as the first round nears its end.
Port Layola opened the scoring in the 19th minute when #5 Juan Luquez put the home side ahead. Verdes, however, responded with the composure expected of defending champions. Their pressure paid off in the 30th minute, when #40 Ronald Benavides equalised to bring the match level.
The visitors continued to dictate the tempo after the break, and in the 61st minute, #13 Félix Martínez struck the winner, completing the comeback and sealing Verdes’ return to the top of the standings. Martínez has scored key goals for Verdes over the last couple of seasons, and once again delivered in a decisive moment.
With only one match left in the first round of the regular season, Verdes have positioned themselves firmly as the team to beat, while Port Layola remain in mid‑table as they continue their push for playoff contention.
The match had been rescheduled from Sunday due to the unavailability of the venue.
