By Rubén Morales Iglesias: As the 2025–2026 Premier League of Belize opening season reaches its midpoint, the standings reflect a fiercely competitive campaign with little separating the top contenders. After six weeks of action, Verdes FC sit atop the table, but the margin is razor-thin, and the race for playoff positions is heating up.
Verdes FC remain the only unbeaten team in the league, with two wins and two draws from four matches. Their 9 goals scored and a commanding +8 goal differential give them the edge over Progresso, despite both teams being level on 8 points. Verdes’ consistency and defensive strength have made them early favourites, but the competition is closing in fast.
Progresso have played one more match than Verdes and share the same point total, but their goal differential of +6 places them second. With two wins, two draws, and one loss, they’ve shown attacking flair—scoring a league-high 11 goals—but will need to tighten up defensively to keep pace with the leaders.
Belmopan and Napoles FC are locked in a battle for third place, each with 7 points from four matches. Belmopan’s +5 goal differential gives them the edge, while Napoles, despite having a negative goal differential (-1), have managed to stay in contention thanks to timely wins and solid midfield play. Both clubs are just one point off the top and remain serious title threats.
Port Layola sit fifth with 5 points, having earned one win and two draws. Their +2 goal differential suggests a balanced squad, but they’ll need more consistency to challenge the top four. With only four matches played, they have room to climb.
Wagiya, with 4 points from five matches, have shown flashes of potential but remain vulnerable with a -6 goal differential. Meanwhile, Capital Sport Club (Benque Viejo United) are in dire straits, having earned just one point and conceded a league-worst 17 goals, leaving them with a staggering -14 goal differential.
As the second half of the season looms, fans can expect more twists in this tightly contested campaign.
