By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Verdes FC, the Premier League of Belize leaders, host fourth-place Wagiya in a Week 10 fixture at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen on Saturday, October 18 at 7:30 pm.
This isn’t just a top-four matchup—it’s a clash between Belize’s two oldest football clubs. Verdes FC, founded in 1976, and Wagiya, established in 1983, have been central to Belizean football long before the Belize Semi-Pro Football League, the precursor to the Premier League of Belize, emerged in 1991. Their rivalry has endured through decades, marked by fierce battles regardless of standings.
Though Wagiya have faltered in recent seasons, they’ve shown marked improvement this year, climbing to fourth with 11 points and a more competitive squad. Even during their lean years, matches against Verdes have remained intense, often drawing passionate crowds and delivering unpredictable outcomes.
Verdes, unbeaten with 20 points and a +17 goal difference, will look to maintain their dominance. Wagiya, with a -3 goal difference but renewed form, aim to disrupt the leaders and stake their claim among the top contenders.
A win for Verdes would further cement their lead, while Wagiya could leap into third if Progresso stumble in Belmopan.
