By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Premier League of Belize (PLB) will be inactive this weekend as focus shifts to international football, with the Belize Men’s National Team competing in a crucial Concacaf Gold Cup qualifier against Costa Rica. The first match is set for Friday, March 21, at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan, while the return leg will take place on Tuesday, March 25, in Costa Rica.
As the national team battles on the international stage, PLB teams will use the break to prepare for the final set of regular-season matches, set to resume on March 29 and 30. While Port Layola, Verdes, and Progresso have already secured their spots in the playoffs, the competition remains intense for the final berth. Belmopan and the San Pedro Pirates are locked in a tight race, with only one team able to advance to the postseason.
The playoff race isn’t the only drama unfolding. Verdes and Progresso are both vying for the all-important home-field advantage in their playoff matchup. Currently, Verdes hold a narrow two-point lead over Progresso in the standings, with 16 and 14 points, respectively. Verdes will aim to solidify their hold on second place when they face Belmopan in their final regular-season game. Meanwhile, Progresso will look for a victory against Wagiya and hope for a Verdes loss, which would allow them to leapfrog into second place.
The final round of regular-season fixtures will see San Pedro host league leaders Port Layola, while Verdes face Belmopan, and Wagiya take on Progresso.
As Belize unites to cheer on the national team, anticipation for the final PLB games and the playoffs remains high.
Here are the current standings as teams gear up for these pivotal clashes:
| Position | Team | Points |
| 1 | Port Layola | 23 |
| 2 | Verdes | 16 |
| 3 | Progresso | 14 |
| 4 | Belmopan | 10 |
| 5 | San Pedro Pirates | 9 |
| 6 | Wagiya | 2 |
