By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ambergris Stadium came alive on Saturday, April 5, as the San Pedro Pirates and Port Loyola battled to a gripping 1-1 draw in the first leg of the Premier League of Belize 2024-2025 Closing Championship semifinals.
San Pedro Pirates took the lead in dramatic fashion when Brian Chavez found the back of the net during injury time in the 45th minute plus, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
However, the visiting Port Loyola team kept their composure and equalized in the 75th minute thanks to Latrell Middleton, keeping the tension high throughout the match.
This clash follows last week’s goalless draw between the teams, marking the second tie in as many meetings. Port Loyola, who triumphed 3-1 over the Pirates in the first round of the regular season, are hoping to extend their success in the decisive second leg. The home-and-away series is set to culminate at the Marion Jones Sports Complex in Belize City on Sunday, April 13.
Both teams have demonstrated they are rather even despite the ranking disparity, and with the aggregate score hanging in delicate balance, fans can expect an riveting match in Belize City.
