Premier League of Belize: Progresso win 1st game, whip Wagiya 5-1

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Progresso ran over Wagiya 5-1 at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga on Sunday in the fourth week of the Premier League of Belize 2023-24 Closing Championship recording their first win after two losses and a draw.

Daijon Daniels and Andir Chi led the way for Progresso with a brace each. Daniels hit his two in the 9’ and 90’ while Chi connected in the 34’ and 84’. The fifth goal was converted from the penalty spot by Richard Gillett in the 43’.

Harrison Roches scored Wagiya’s consolation goal in the 36’ putting the game 2-1 at the time and giving Wagiya hopes of playing a competitive match, but it was not to be. Veteran Roches now has two goals having scored in the season opening 1-0 win over Police Benque in Benque Viejo del Carmen on Saturday, January 14. However, things haven’t gone well for Wagiya after that win, dropping the next three consecutively, 5-2 to Port Layola, 5-0 to Verdes, and now 5-1 to Progresso.

Progresso seem to be mending their ways after a bad start to the Closing Season. They lost their first two matches, 1-0 to Benque Viejo United and 2-1 to the Bandits before leveling 2-2 against champions Altitude last week. They now have four points.

In the other weekend matches, Benque Viejo United drew 0-0 against champions Altitude and Police Benque drew 1-1 with the Bandits on Saturday, while Verdes edged Port Layola 1-0.
