Premier League of Belize: Progresso pull off 2-2 last-minute draw against champions Altitude

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Andir Chi converted from the penalty spot in the last seconds of the ball game in the 90’+4 at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk to give Progresso an agonizing 2-2 draw against defending champions Altitude in Week 3 of the Premier League of Belize 2023-24 Closing Championship.

Home-standing Progresso took the lead in the 18^th minute when Alwin Zelaya nailed the opener.

Progresso celebrated wildly in the 32^nd minute when Chi hammered a great shot to the right which sailed in beyond Oscar Palomino’s outstretched arms but the referee called it off after his assistant said a foul had been committed before the strike.

Ashley ‘Tosa’ Torres tied the match for Altitude four minutes into injury time (45’+4) to end the first half even-steven at 1-1.

The champions went ahead 2-1 on a Gabriel Ramos, Jr. shot that found the net in the 59^th minute.

While it appeared that Altitude would salvage the win, Chi’s late goal evened the score at 2-2.

The draw gave Progresso their first point in three outings while Altitude collected their fourth.

In the other weekend games, on Saturday, Benque Viejo United dumped the Belmopan Bandits 3-1 at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan and Port Layola downed Police Benque (Club Deportivo Benque) 3-1 at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen. On Sunday, Verdes dumped Wagiya 5-0 at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio .
