By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Progresso closed out their Premier League of Belize 2024-2025 Closing Championship regular season on a high note with a commanding 3-0 victory over Wagiya at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga on Sunday afternoon. While their playoff berth had already been secured in Week 9, the win bolstered their momentum heading into a tough playoff showdown against Verdes.
Colombian Yubeiquer Arenas broke the deadlock in the 69th minute with a composed finish, putting Progresso in the driver’s seat. Eleven minutes later, in the 80th, Izon Gill extended the lead, leaving Wagiya’s defense flat-footed. Andir Chi wrapped up the scoring in the 89th minute, sealing an emphatic win for Progresso.
Though Wagiya’s season came to a close with just two points, they fought hard to salvage pride in their final match. However, Progresso’s offensive drive proved too much for the Dangriga-based side, ending what was a challenging campaign for them.
Despite their win, Progresso’s dreams of a second-place finish were thwarted when Verdes thrashed Belmopan 6-1 on Saturday. Verdes’ dominance ensured they retained the second seed and set up a playoff matchup between the two sides.
The playoffs now promise a formidable clash, with both Progresso and Verdes entering the postseason on winning momentum. Progresso will look to build on their solid 3-0 victory, while Verdes bring confidence from their emphatic 6-1 triumph over Belmopan. Both teams will be eager to advance in their quest for the championship, ensuring fans a thrilling and intense showdown.
