By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Premier League of Belize (PLB) Semifinals continue this Sunday, April 6, as Progresso FC and Verdes FC face off at People’s Stadium in Orange Walk in the first leg of their battle for a spot in the championship final.

Verdes enter this matchup with the upper hand, having already secured a 4-1 victory over Progresso on January 18 in San Ignacio’s Cayo Stadium during the regular season. However, when the teams met again in Orange Walk on February 23, Progresso managed to hold Verdes to a hard-fought 0-0 draw, proving they can stand their ground when given home advantage.

This semifinal carries immense weight—not just in the pursuit of the PLB championship, but also in determining qualification for the Concacaf Central American Cup. Verdes, having topped the cumulative table over the course of the season, hold a key advantage in regional qualification. If they win the league, they automatically qualify for the Central American Cup.

However, if Progresso or San Pedro Pirates claim the title as champions, Port Layola—who finished ahead of both in the cumulative standings—would still claim the Central American Cup spot based on their higher ranking. If Port Layola wins the championship, they qualify outright as double champions.

This puts additional pressure on Progresso, who not only seek to eliminate Verdes but also to shake up the qualification race. They know that a win at home on Sunday will set the tone for the decisive second leg, where Verdes will return to their fortress in Cayo.

Double the action for fans at People’s Stadium

Spectators can enjoy 1st Division matches earlier in the day before the semifinal showdown. An entrance fee of $10 covers both events, while those arriving after 2:00 p.m. will pay $15.

Sunday’s Schedule at People’s Stadium

San Estevan Soccer Team vs. TF Legends – 11:00 am

Mi Gente vs. San Jose Pumas – 1:00 pm

Progresso FC vs. Verdes FC (PLB Semifinal) – 4:00 pm

Kickoff at People’s Stadium is set for 4:00 p.m. Can Progresso defy expectations and seize control of the semifinal, or will Verdes hold their ground and take a step closer to the title?
