By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Premier League of Belize 2023-24 Closing Season champions Port Layola were merciless with Wagiya, blasting them 4-0 on Sunday in the last Week 7 match at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga.
The victory gives Port 13 points, effectively catapulting them over the San Pedro Pirates, who had surpassed them into third place last Friday when they edged the Belmopan Bandits 1-0 at Ambergris Stadium in San Pedro.
Rene Leslie, who’s become a force to reckon with, nailed in a brace for Port, scoring the team’s second goal in the 53rd minute and the third two minutes later in the 55th. Before him, Orlando Velasquez, who’s improved his image with good performances as well, converted the opener in the 49th minute.
Last season’s top scorer, Latrell Middleton, who’s back from injury, put the cherry on the cake in the 72nd minute for the final 4-0 trouncing of the Dangriga club.
Recording their sixth loss, Wagiya have been unable to lift themselves over the single point they gained in seven outings.
In the other weekend game, Verdes blanked Progresso 3-0 in Benque Viejo del Carmen, wrestling away the top spot and relegating Progresso into second place.
