By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The excitement has reached fever pitch as Port Layola FC kick off their title defense against the San Pedro Pirates in the first leg of the Premier League of Belize 2024-2025 Opening Championship Final. The match is set for tonight, Saturday, November 30, 2024, at 7:30 pm at the Ambergris Stadium in San Pedro.
Port aim to get a win in San Pedro and then finish off the Pirates at the Marion Jones Sports Complex in Belize City the following week.
Port Layola FC, the defending champions, are in overdrive. After experiencing the thrill of international football at the Concacaf Central American Cup, they are determined to maintain their PLB dominance. They are focused and ready to defend their title against the San Pedro Pirates, who’ve proven to be a formidable opponent.
The San Pedro Pirates acceded to the playoffs as fourth seeded but took out frontrunners, Verdes who had dominated the regular season and had reached the playoffs as the great favourites.
The Pirates, who last clinched a national championship in 2019, are under the experienced leadership of Brazilian coach Jorge Nunes. He has had a remarkable football year, having already secured the NAIC Championship with San Pedro’s Terror Squad. Apart from winning other juvenile trophies with Orange Walk’s Progresso teams, he recently joined Belize Men’s National Team (BMNT) head coach Charlie Slusher in leading the BMNT to win its group in League C, secure promotion to League B in the Concacaf Nations League, and potentially qualify for the Gold Cup.
Port will respond with rookie coach Julius Allen, who has led them to another final after Slusher left to take over the BMNT at the beginning of the season.
The Pirates are eager to add another trophy to their collection and are calling on their fans to come out in full force to support them for the first leg at home.
Tickets for the match are available at $25 now but will cost $35 at the gate.
