All eyes turn to Marion Jones Sports Complex in Belize City on Monday afternoon as Port Layola welcome defending champions Verdes FC in the final fixture of the Premier League of Belize 2025–2026 Opening Championship first round. Originally scheduled for 4:00 pm, the match has been delayed by one hour due to waterlogged field conditions and will now kick off at 5:00 pm.
According to the match commissioner, representatives from both teams are present at the venue and have agreed to the delay. The management of Port Layola and the National Sports Council, which oversees the facility, have been given an additional hour to clear water from the pitch.
“The game will be played, but the time will be changed. The game will start at 5:00. They gave it an hour more because both teams agree. Both teams are present at the venue right now. They will start working on it as we speak—cleaning out the water on the field and giving it a chance to dry. The game will start at 5:00 pm this evening,” the match commissioner said at 9:00 am on Monday.
Verdes enter Week 7 unbeaten, sitting atop the table with 11 points, 13 goals scored, and a commanding +11 goal difference. Port Layola, last season’s Opening Championship winners, trail by three points and will rely on their disciplined backline to contain the Green Machine’s fluid attack.
A win for Verdes would place them four points clear of Belmopan and Napoles, amplifying their lead heading into the second round. Meanwhile, Port Layola could leap into joint first with 11 points—setting the stage for a thrilling second half of the season.
