By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Port Layola FC secured their first victory of the Premier League of Belize 2025-2026 Closing Championship on Wednesday night, defeating Wagiya SC 1–0 in the rescheduled Week 1 fixture at the Marion Jones Sports Complex in Belize City.
The match, originally postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, finally kicked off under clear conditions — and Port Layola struck early. In the 7th minute, Moises Hernández (#8) finished clinically to give the home side a 1–0 lead.
Port Layola carried that advantage into halftime and maintained their discipline throughout the second half, closing down Wagiya’s attempts to find an equalizer. Despite late pressure, the visitors were unable to break through.
With the win, Port Layola bounced back after Saturday’s 3–0 loss to league leaders Progresso FC in Orange Walk and now sit at 1‑0‑1 (W‑D‑L).
For Wagiya, the defeat marks their second straight loss, dropping them to 0‑0‑2 after falling 2–0 to Verdes FC on Saturday in Benque Viejo del Carmen.
The result officially completes the league’s opening round, with all teams now having played two matches except Verdes and Belmopan FC, who have only played once each.
