By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Port Layola delivered a commanding performance, defeating Progresso 4-1 in a rescheduled Premier League of Belize (PLB) match on Wednesday night at the Marion Jones Sports Complex in Belize City. The victory propelled Port to 16 points after just six games, extending their lead at the top of the table.
The match, originally postponed following a shooting incident during the Belize District Football Association (BDFA) semifinals at the same venue, finally took place, with Port Layola eager to capitalize on their strong start to the season.
The first half remained goalless, with both teams battling for control. However, Port Layola came out firing after the break. Latrell Middleton opened the scoring in the 49th minute, igniting the home crowd. Ian Gaynair doubled the lead in the 64th minute, powerfully heading the ball into the net, putting Port firmly in control. Adding to Progresso’s woes, in the 71st minute, Progresso’s Luis Felipe Parra García received his second yellow card after a foul on Gilroy ‘Bredda’ Thurton resulting in a red card ejection, leaving his team with ten men.
The late stages of the game saw a flurry of goals. Middleton added his second in stoppage time (90+1), seemingly sealing a comfortable victory. However, Progresso’s Andir Chi managed to pull one back in the 90+3 minute. While it was too late for a comeback, Port weren’t done yet nailing one more. Middleton completed his hat-trick, scoring his third in the 90+5 minute to make it 4-1.
The final whistle confirmed Port Layola’s dominant display, securing a crucial three points. The victory solidifies their position at the top of the PLB standings, now boasting 16 points. They now stand five points ahead of Verdes and six points clear of Progresso, showing their dominance this season.
The match was played under heightened security due to the previous incident at the Marion Jones, ensuring a safe environment for players and fans alike.
