By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Sunday, February 15 witnessed another exciting match as reigning champions Port Layola triumphed over San Pedro Pirates with a 3-1 victory at the Marion Jones Sports Complex in Belize City, during Week 5 of the Premier League of Belize 2024-2025 Closing Championship.
San Pedro Pirates started strong, with Brayan Vargas scoring in the 4th minute. However, Port Layola quickly responded with Gilroy Thurton equalizing in the 25th minute.
The first half ended in a 1-1 draw, but Port Layola took control in the second half. Colombian striker Andrés Orozco scored in the 87th minute, and Michael Palacio secured the win with a goal in stoppage time (90+1 minutes).
With this victory, Port Layola slid past Verdes to take the top spot in the league standings, both teams tied at ten points but Port Layola ahead on goal difference. Their consistent performance this season continues to solidify their status as title contenders. Plus, they still haven’t played the match against Progresso, which was postponed earlier in the season.
