By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Port Layola, the Premier League of Belize champions, defeated Wagiya 3-2 in a hotly contested match at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan on Wednesday, August 28, 2024. This match, originally scheduled for Sunday, August 11, completes Week 2 of the 2024-25 Opening Season.
The victory propels Port Layola over the San Pedro Pirates into third place with seven points after four matches. The Pirates drop back to fourth place with five points.
Brazilian Mailson Moura opened the scoring for Wagiya in the 21st minute. However, Port Layola quickly responded, taking the lead with two goals by Colombian Andrés Orozco in the 28th and 33rd minutes. Peruvian Mathías Bandini extended Port Layola’s lead to 3-1 in the 65th minute.
Wagiya rallied back, making the match more intense with Nigel Elijio’s goal in the 80th minute. However, time ran out for the Dangriga side, and the game ended 3-2 in Port Layola’s favour.
In the original schedule, the match was Wagiya’s home game, but in agreeing with Port to postpone it in order to facilitate Port’s travel plans for their Concacaf Central American Cup away match against Águila in El Salvador, the first match became Port’s home game and was played in Belmopan rather than Belize City. The second-round match will be Wagiya’s and should be played at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga on Sunday, September 22.
While the victory keeps Port Layola in contention with leaders Progresso (12 points) and Verdes (9 points), Wagiya remains in fifth position with only one point. Despite their current standing, Wagiya has shown improvement over the last two matches and will not be an easy team to roll over in the second round.
