Premier League of Belize: Port Layola clinch Regular Season title with commanding 3-1 victory over Progresso

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: In a high-powered match, Port Layola overwhelmed Progresso 3-1 on Sunday at the Marion Jones Sports Complex in Belize City in Week 8 of the Premier League of Belize 2024-2025 Closing Championship, securing their position as the top team in the regular season with two matches to spare.

The match kicked off with intense energy, and it wasn’t long before Port Layola’s Rene Leslie found the back of the net in the 10th minute, setting the tone for the game. Progresso responded swiftly with Colombian Walter Gómez’s equaliser in the 25th minute, but Port Layola were undeterred. One of their own Colombians, Andrés Orozco, put their team back in the lead with a goal in the 40th minute, and Latrell Middleton sealed the deal with a goal in the 45’+5, giving Port Layola a comfortable 3-1 advantage heading into halftime. No more goals were forthcoming in the second half.

With this crucial win, Port Layola now total 22 points, seven points clear of their nearest rivals, Verdes. This victory not only crowns them the regular season winners but also guarantees them the number one seed heading into the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Verdes (15 points) and Progresso (13 points) are left battling for second and third places, while San Pedro Pirates (8 points) and Belmopan (7 points) are in a fierce contest for the fourth spot. Mathematically, San Pedro Pirates and Corozal still have a chance to secure second or third places.

In an interesting twist, all the goals across the Week 8 matches were scored in the first half. Verdes dominated Wagiya with a 4-0 victory, and Belmopan bested San Pedro Pirates 2-0.

Port Layola’s triumph has undoubtedly set the stage for an exciting playoff series, where they will enter as the team to beat. With teams jostling for the final playoff positions, expect very competitive matches over the next two weekends.
