By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Three weeks into the Premier League of Belize, the standings tell a story of surprise, pedigree, and redemption. Napoles FC, the Cinderella team of the season, sit alone at the top with seven points, while traditional powerhouses Verdes FC and Wagiya SC find themselves on opposite ends of the table — one recovering from a continental blow, the other still searching for form.
Napoles FC: Unbeaten and Unshaken
Napoles have defied expectations with two wins and a draw, scoring four and conceding just two. Their disciplined approach and team chemistry have earned them the top spot heading into a pivotal Week 4 clash against second-place Progresso FC in Orange Walk. All eyes will be on that matchup as Napoles look to extend their unbeaten run.
Verdes FC: Domestic Strength, International Bruise
Verdes, defending national champions and one of Belize’s oldest clubs, sit third with four points from two matches. Their domestic form remains solid, but they’re coming off a humbling 8–1 defeat to CS Cartaginés in Costa Rica during Wednesday night’s Central American Cup fixture. That result may sting, but it could also sharpen their focus as they return to league play against Wagiya SC.
Wagiya SC: Roots Shaken
Also among Belize’s oldest football institutions, Wagiya are in a rut. Three matches, three losses, and a -7 goal differential have left them at the bottom of the table. Hosting Verdes in Dangriga this weekend, they’ll need more than history to turn things around.
