By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Port Layola’s Gilroy ‘Bredda’ Thurton might not have played the finals of the Premier League of Belize 2023-24 Opening Championship in December but he was named the Championship’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).

Thurton found himself out of the fray after fracturing his right ankle. Thurton, who plays as a wing-forward, suffered the injury in the last semifinal match against Progresso on Sunday, December 10, at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex in Belize City. His team subsequently earned the PLB subchampionship falling to Altitude in the Finals.

Thurton was also voted as the Best Forward.

Port Layola’s also earned two other awards. Charles Tillett was named Best Goalkeeper and Latrell Middleton was voted Best Midfielder.

Champions Altitude, who finished fourth in the regular season behind Verdes, Port Layola, and Progresso (in that order) earned three awards. Ashley ‘Tosa’ Torres, their most veteran player and one of the most veterans in the PLB, was voted Best Defender. First-year coach Zerrick Torres gained the Best Coach award. Altitude also captured the Fair Play award.

Progresso gained two awards. Alwin Zelaya was named the Best Young Player and Marco Novelo was recognized as the Best Manager.

Benque Viejo United, who missed making the playoffs by a point, were voted as the Most Entertaining Team,

For the first time in many seasons, Verdes failed to win a single award. Verdes, who played the 2023-24 Opening Championship as the defending champions, won the regular season, but failed to retain the title falling to Altitude in the semifinals. That cost them dearly.
