By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Verdes FC may not have scored in Orange Walk, but the champions return to Benque Viejo with the advantage after holding Progresso FC to a 0–0 draw in the first leg of the Premier League of Belize (PLB) Opening Championship Final on Sunday at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk.

⚽ First Half

Progresso started aggressively, pressing high and creating chances through Rene Leslie, Latrell Middleton, and Keydenshaay Bowen. Despite their energy, they couldn’t find the finishing touch. Verdes absorbed the pressure, with Christian Ramírez and Darrel Myvett anchoring the defence and Woodrow West commanding his box. Captain Jordy Polanco and Joel Burgos tried to spark Verdes’ attack, but Progresso’s back line held firm.

🔄 Second-Half Drama

Verdes grew into the game after halftime substitutions. Christian Ramírez rattled the crossbar with a thunderous free kick in the 69th minute, while Nahjib Guerra forced a save from Progresso’s Cunil. Progresso’s Latrell Middleton missed two golden opportunities — blasting over in the 79th minute and hesitating fatally in the 95th, when West recovered to smother the ball.

Verdes also came close through Desmond Wade, who fired wide in the 87th minute, but the champions ultimately leaned on West’s composure to escape Orange Walk unscathed.

🏆 The Advantage

Though the scoreline remains 0–0, Verdes now head home to Benque Viejo del Carmen, where they will enjoy the backing of their fans in the decisive second leg. With seven national titles already in their history, Verdes know how to finish the job. Progresso, meanwhile, must regroup quickly if they are to seize their maiden crown.
