By Rubén Morales Iglesias: A decision is expected this week from the Premier League of Belize (PLB) Disciplinary Committee regarding the suspended Week 10 clash between Wagiya SC and Belmopan FC. The Committee is currently reviewing the matter after Belmopan FC opted not to play the match, which had been confirmed for Saturday, October 11 at 4:00 pm at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga.
Wagiya had requested that the match, originally scheduled for Sunday, be played on Saturday to avoid conflict with the Belize Men’s National Team (BMNT) international friendly against Venezuela, which was set for Tuesday, October 14 in the Chicago area. The BMNT were expected to travel on Sunday, and Wagiya didn’t want to line up without key player Warren Moss. However, Moss ultimately ended up in a situation where he wouldn’t have traveled with the BMNT. The friendly Venezuela match was subsequently called off due to security concerns in Chicago related to the deportation situation.
Belmopan FC wasn’t in agreement with the date change requested by Wagiya. However, the PLB’s Organizing Committee ruled in favour of Wagiya’s request, confirming the match for Saturday. At the Technical Meeting on Friday, Belmopan FC allegedly walked out after discussions failed to resolve the dispute. The PLB later stated that Belmopan had indicated they wouldn’t play on Saturday.
Belmopan had proposed that the match be played midweek this week in Belmopan, citing that the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga does not have lighting that meets PLB standards for night games. The standard procedure for postponed matches is to reschedule them the following midweek before the next round of fixtures. With no agreement reached and Belmopan refusing to play on Saturday, the PLB referred the matter to the Disciplinary Committee.
Wagiya, having already finalized logistics for Saturday’s match—including matchday security expect to be awarded the three points.
Both clubs are closely matched in the standings, with Belmopan FC (10 points) holding a game in hand and a +5 goal difference, while Wagiya (11 points) have scored 11 goals but carry a -3 goal differential.
Other Week 10 fixtures remained unaffected:
- Capital Sports Club 0-4 Progresso – Isidoro Beaton Stadium, Belmopan – Saturday, October 11
- Port Layola 4-1 Napoles FC – Marion Jones Sports Complex, Belize City – Monday, October 13
