By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Premier League of Belize is gearing up for the start of the 2025–2026 Closing Championship, which officially kicks off on the weekend of January 17 and 18. With the opening whistle set for Saturday the 17th and the remaining matches scheduled for Sunday, the league has confirmed that all seven clubs are expected to participate: Verdes FC, Progresso FC, Port Layola FC, Belmopan FC, Napoles FC, Wagiya SC, and Capital Sport Club (Benque United).
Capital Sport Club return despite a difficult 2024–2025 campaign in which they earned only one point, scoring just six goals while conceding 63 for a –57 goal differential, an average of 5.25 goals allowed per game over the 12‑match regular season. Their inclusion completes the seven‑team field for the new tournament.
Verdes FC enter the championship as the defending titleholders after edging Progresso FC in a tense two‑leg final to close the previous season. The first leg at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk ended 0–0, leaving everything to be decided in the return match. In the decisive second leg at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo, Verdes found the lone breakthrough they needed, securing a 1–0 victory and claiming the title on a 1–0 aggregate.
With that win, Verdes crowned themselves back‑to‑back champions, having also lifted the 2024–2025 Closing Championship. Their quest for a three‑peat begins in mid‑January as they prepare to defend their crown against six determined challengers.
