By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Premier League of Belize closes its regular season with three games this weekend, led by the fight for the top spot between leaders Verdes and champions Port Layola on Sunday at 4:00 pm at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio.
Verdes currently lead the PLB with 21 points but are closely followed by Port Layola with 19. A victory for either guarantees the top spot.
A draw favours Verdes and allows for third-place Progresso, 17 points, to catch up with Port. Progresso will be visiting the San Pedro Pirates, who are currently in fourth place with 15 points, at the Ambergris Stadium in San Pedro on Saturday night at 7:30pm. That should also be a good match. Either way they’ll meet either Verdes or Port Layola in the semifinals. The question is who would they rather avoid. It’s like being between a rock and a hard place.
The other match features Wagiya SC at home against the Belmopan Bandits Sports on Sunday at 4:00 pm at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga. Wagiya need to beat the Bandits by two goals to jump out of last place. Any thing less, keeps Bandits in seventh place.
