By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Benque Viejo United beat Progresso 1-0 in their opening game of the Premier League of Belize (PLB) 2023-24 Closing Championship at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk Town on Saturday, January 14, 2024.

Izon Gill scored the only goal of the match in the 70^th minute to give the Benque side the 1-0 win.

At the end of the previous championship’s regular season Progresso beat Benque Viejo United knocking out any probability Benque Viejo United had of qualifying for the playoffs. So, it must have been a sense of satisfaction to start off by beating their nemesis.

In the other opening weekend matches, champions Altitude slipped past subchampions Port Layola 3-2 at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence, Wagiya slipped past Police Benque (Club Deportivo Benque) at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen, and Verdes pumped 3-0 into the Belmopan Bandits 3-0 at the Norman Broaster Stadium.
