By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Premier League of Belize 2025–2026 Opening Championship semifinals bring a classic underdog-versus-favorite clash as Belmopan FC (#4) host champions Verdes FC (#1) on Saturday, November 22 at 7:30pm at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan. After two tight regular season encounters — a 1–0 Verdes win in Benque and a 1–1 draw in Belmopan — the stage is set for a playoff battle defined by fine margins.
Belmopan’s hopes rest heavily on their American strike duo, Adrien Graffin and Dawoda Kamara, who have each scored six goals this season. They also boast the experience of Miguel Garcia, a proven midfielder who has lifted PLB championships with both Altitude and Port Layola, and perennial defender Ian Gaynair, whose leadership at the back is matched by his knack for scoring key goals. Alongside him, fellow Belize Men’s National Team defender Eugene Martinez adds grit and reliability, and like Gaynair, has a reputation for delivering clutch strikes in big matches. In goal, Belmopan sport Colombian keeper Oscar Palomino, another player with championship pedigree from his time at Altitude and Port Layola.
Verdes, by contrast, spread their scoring threat across several players. Desmond Wade has seven league goals and added four more for Belize in the Concacaf Friendly Series, including a hat trick against St Kitts. Krisean Lopez has been a consistent danger in transition, while Paraguayan Luis Ibarra showed his clutch ability with a stoppage-time equalizer in Belmopan. Beyond the frontline, Verdes’ midfield adds another layer of danger: captain Jordy Polanco and Nahjib Guerra, both Belize Men’s National Team players, not only control the tempo but also carry goalscoring ability.

And in goal, Verdes sport Belize’s top goalkeeper Woodrow West, whose résumé is unmatched: 17 national championships from 23 finals, including the last five with Verdes, plus a Honduran league title with Honduras Progreso. Behind him, Argentine keeper Nahuel Paz provides a strong backup option, ensuring Verdes remain secure between the posts.
The regular season meetings showed Belmopan’s ability to frustrate the leaders. Wade’s 76th-minute strike gave Verdes a narrow 1–0 win in Round 5, while Martinez’s early goal nearly delivered Belmopan an upset victory at home before Ibarra’s stoppage-time equalizer salvaged a 1–1 draw.
Now, with the Opening Championship on the line, Belmopan must find a way to turn those near-misses into a win over the defending champions, who will be at home for the decisive final the following week.
