By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belmopan FC came within minutes of upsetting league leaders Verdes FC on Saturday night, but a late strike from Paraguayan Luis Ibarra ensured the visitors escaped with a 1–1 draw at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopán.
Eugene Martinez gave Belmopan the lead in the 8th minute, and the home side held firm until deep into stoppage time. Ibarra’s equalizer in the 90+2’ minute preserved Verdes’ unbeaten record and extended their lead atop the Premier League of Belize standings.
Verdes now sit on 24 points from ten matches, maintaining a four-point cushion over second-place Progresso (20). Belmopan remain fourth with 14 points, just ahead of Wagiya (11) and Napoles (10).
The weekend also saw Progresso FC dismantle Wagiya SC 8–1 at People’s Stadium, while Port Layola recorded a resounding 10–0 win over Capital Sport Club in Belize City.
