By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belmopan FC, the club that inherited the mantle from the storied Belmopan Bandits franchise, will take the field Saturday night as visitors in the first-ever capital derby against newly formed Capital Sport Club. The Premier League of Belize fixture kicks off at 7:30 pm at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium.

While both sides are new to the PLB in name, Belmopan FC carry the legacy of the Bandits—once the most decorated club in Belizean football—and have already played a PLB season under their new identity. But instead of being the capital’s sole top-flight team, they now find themselves as one of three Premier League clubs based in Belmopan.

After a goalless draw against Progresso in Week 2, Belmopan FC secured their first win last Saturday, defeating Wagiya 3–0 at home. Eugene Martinez converted from the spot in the 16th minute, Adam Kamara doubled the lead in the 36th, and Stephen Moralez sealed the result in the 62nd.

With four points from two matches and no goals conceded, Belmopan FC sit fourth in the standings. But they now face pressure not only from Capital Sport Club, who are seeking to establish themselves, but also from Napoles FC—whose sudden rise has shifted the local hierarchy. Though Napoles are also new to the PLB, their years of competition in the Belmopan First Division have earned them a loyal following and a well-organized structure that’s translated into early success. With seven points from three matches, Napoles currently lead the league and appear to be relegating Belmopan FC to second fiddle in the capital’s football conversation.

Meanwhile, Capital Sport Club—playing under the Benque Viejo United franchise—have struggled in their opening fixtures. Though backed by a Mexico-based football development group, their heavy defeats to Verdes (7-0) and Progresso (5-1) suggest that support alone won’t earn credibility. Without a turnaround on the field, any long-term ambitions will remain speculative. Raheem Eagan netted their lone goal in the 58th minute last Sunday, but defensive lapses allowed Progresso to score five times, including two in added time

Saturday’s match marks Capital Sport Club’s first home appearance at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium. For Belmopan FC, it’s not just a chance to build momentum in the chase for the Premier League of Belize championship—it’s a moment to reassert relevance in a city where Napoles have quickly become the team to watch.

Beyond the pitch, the emergence of three PLB clubs in Belmopan has sparked a new wave of fan engagement. Napoles FC, with their grassroots ties and consistent First Division presence, have cultivated a passionate base that’s now swelling into top-flight support. Belmopan FC, despite their inherited prestige, are still working to reconnect with fans disillusioned by the Bandits’ recent decline. Capital Sport Club, though struggling on the field, have drawn curiosity but so far that’s all.

With Napoles FC setting the early pace, Belmopan FC remaining in the chase, and Capital Sport Club seeking redemption, the capital derbies will add a new layer of rivalry to the PLB—one that could reshape the football landscape in Belmopan for seasons to come.
