Preliminary inquiry delayed again for Paul Sambula, accused killer of Edward ‘Scrubby’ Saldano

By Breaking Belize News Staff: The preliminary inquiry for 31-year-old Paul Elver Sambula, accused of murdering well-known Belize City street figure Edward Saldano Jr., also known as “Scrubby,” has been postponed again, this time until December 28, 2026.

Sambula, a former call center employee, appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, November 5, where the prosecutor informed the court that the magistrate assigned to conduct the preliminary inquiry was attending training.

The prosecution initially requested an adjournment until November 18, but Sambula asked for additional time to review the evidence against him and secure legal representation.

The court granted his request, setting December 28 as the new date for his preliminary inquiry.

As previously reported by Breaking Belize News, Sambula received full disclosure of the prosecution’s evidence on October 9, including 162 pages of documents, 16 photographs and 11 DVDs.

Sambula was arraigned on March 10, 2026, five days after Saldano, 26, was fatally shot near the intersection of Dean Street and Amara Avenue in Belize City.

The daylight killing, which occurred around 12:30 p.m. on March 5, was captured on surveillance footage.

Investigators reported that Saldano was riding a bicycle when he was confronted by an armed assailant. A struggle ensued, during which Saldano was shot. After he collapsed, the gunman allegedly stood over him and fired additional shots.

Saldano was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Sambula remains on remand at the Belize Central Prison as he awaits his preliminary inquiry.
