By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 29-year-old pregnant mother of two, Shanika Shantia Jacobs, walked free this week after her ex-boyfriend, who accused her of burning his clothes, told the court he no longer wished to pursue the matter.
Jacobs, originally from Punta Gorda but now residing in Mahogany Heights, had been charged with arson—an indictable offense that carries up to 10 years in prison—after allegedly setting fire to $235 worth of clothing belonging to her ex.
In court, Jacobs appeared emotional as her ex took the stand. Instead of pressing the case, he told the Senior Magistrate, “It’s a loss to me and dah meh ex. She has two kids and one on the way so I want to be lenient on her.”
With that, the prosecutor withdrew the charge for want of prosecution, and Jacobs was released.
Had the case proceeded, Jacobs would have faced trial in the High Court on the serious charge of arson.
