By Breaking Belize News Staff: Today, a pregnant commuter took to social media to share her experience commuting on public buses daily between Belmopan and Ladyville.

“For the past three years, I’ve been commuting between Belmopan and Ladyville. When I found out I was pregnant, my biggest fear wasn’t that  of the typical pregnant woman—it was having to navigate our public transportation system in this condition. That fear has become a reality I face daily,” Renisse Nerisa said.

“The empathy we Belizeans are so known for seems to vanish the moment a bus arrives. It becomes a survival game. The goal is no longer kindness—it’s simply to get on the bus and maybe find a seat. Despite having a visibly pregnant belly, I’m constantly shoved and pushed aside by grown men trying to get on the bus. That’s my reality,” she added.

Nerisa also referred to Floralia noting that even though the first 2 seats are said to be reserved for pregnant women and persons with disabilities, that is not the case.

“Just this morning, Belmopan terminal staff told me I couldn’t board my intended bus because others had been waiting since 5 AM. So now I write this message while cramped in the seat over the wheel, forced to spread my legs just to avoid pressing into my own belly. It is degrading—and it is dangerous.

This is a public health issue. It is a women’s issue. And it is entirely preventable,” she explained.

The commuter calls on the Ministry of Transport for “real discussion and real changes. The system is broken in so many ways, but at the very least, let us start here. Let us protect pregnant women and the vulnerable on public transport. We deserve that much.”
