The documentary film Cuando el mar nos alcance [When the Sea Reaches Us], produced by the Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research Trust, explores the main causes of sea level rise: the movement of ice from land to sea, the flow of meltwater over land, and the thermal expansion of the ocean. “Filmed in Greenland and Puerto Rico, it offers a visual and human narrative that connects the changes in northern glaciers with the realities of coastal communities in the Caribbean.” Here are excerpts from El Adoquín Times.
The documentary Cuando el mar nos alcance, produced by the Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research Trust, won a 2025 Emmy Award, in addition to five other nominations from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences – Suncoast Chapter. Produced by the Caribbean Sea Level Rise Center—part of the Trust—in collaboration with the Rising Seas Institute, the documentary explores the main causes of sea level rise: the movement of ice from land to sea, the flow of meltwater over land, and the thermal expansion of the ocean.
Filmed in Greenland and Puerto Rico, it offers a visual and human narrative that connects the changes in northern glaciers with the realities of Caribbean coastal communities. With testimonials, scientific data, and stunning images, the production seeks to raise awareness about the urgency of adapting to the climate crisis. This recognition reaffirms that science communication has a legitimate place in the arts and can move and educate through accessible and powerful narratives. “The documentary is a portrait of how our coasts are no longer the same. There was a well-intentioned effort to present the problem of sea level rise by integrating the perspective of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. There are many educational materials on the subject, but few present our local reality with scientific data. This recognition demonstrates that science is not losing relevance—on the contrary, it allows us to understand and confront the environmental transformation we experience every day,” stated Marieli Grant, communications and marketing manager for the Trust. Since its premiere in December 2024— and its broadcast on Telemundo Puerto Rico’s Punto 2 in April 2025 — “When the Sea Reaches Us” has been acclaimed for its educational value, cinematography, and innovative approach to climate change. The documentary is available free of charge at CuandoElMarNosAlcance.org and YouTube, on the FideicomisoTV channel.
