Power outages plague Belize: Residents struggle amidst electricity woes

But, widespread power outages are crippling key tourist destinations and businesses around the nation.

Communities across the country are reeling from the effects of prolonged electricity shortages, leaving residents in distress and businesses in turmoil.

Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) informed customers that the recent power outages are due to temporary Generation Shortages due to curtailment from the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) in Mexico.

According to BEL’s load shedding schedule for today, the old Capital, Belize City will experience power outages from 3pm to 11pm.

Across the country, businesses are being affected since power outages are disrupting operations leading to financial losses and logistical headaches. 

BEL informed customers that their gas turbine at Westlake on the George Price Highway, which is one of their major backup power sources, is being upgraded and is currently out of service.

This generating unit is scheduled to be brought back online early next week.

BEL added that they are installing a gas turbine in San Pedro which should be completed before the end of May.

These will add 30 MW of additional generation capacity to the grid.

Together, these additional generation sources will put the company in a much better position to meet demand if supply from CFE is curtailed, especially during the high demand months of May through July.

As Belize navigates this period of uncertainty, there is a pressing need for long-term solutions to fortify the nation’s energy infrastructure and ensure the reliable supply of electricity for all.
